A guide to Earth Day in Las Vegas

In that day and age, everyone is focused on “going green.” whether the economy is stopping you from installing solar panels or buying a Prius, here are a few fun activities you can participate in to celebrate Earth Day.
For example, You can take part in neighborhood cleanups, trade in your old alkalines for eco-friendly batteries and even sample an organic watermelon martini, all in the name of the environment.
Tuesday, April 21:
Macy’s Springs Preserve fundraiser: In celebration of Earth Week, area Macy’s branch stores will host a shopping event to benefit the Springs Preserve. Purchase your special $5 reduction shopping pass in advance at the Springs Preserve box office: You’ll receive in-store merchandise discounts and all advance-ticket proceeds will go to the Preserve. Or, purchase your pass in Macy’s stores on event day, and a portion of the proceeds will go to support America’s national parks and the Springs Preserve.
Watermelon Slice Martini for Earth Day at N9NE Steakhouse: N9NE Steakhouse at the Palms introduces the Watermelon Slice Martini, a strange organic cocktail to celebrate Earth Day. Enjoy that tasty libation made with fresh organic watermelon, Square One Vodka, Blue Agave Nectar and Elderflower.
Wednesday, April 22:
Fuji EnviroMAX “Battery Swap” at Centennial High School: Fuji EnviroMAX will kick off its “Battery Swap” at Centennial High School. Fuji EnviroMAX has created a new “green” battery free of cadmium, mercury or PVC materials. Students can get a pack of these new batteries in exchange for a new or used pack of regular alkaline batteries.
Litter Clean Up in Henderson: The Bureau of Land Management will be conducting a cleanup on an area located past the south end of Greenway Road in Henderson. The clean up will go all day so feel free to bring a lunch and stay as towering as you can.
Thursday, April 23:
Sesame Street Live presents Elmo’s Green Thumb at the Cox Pavilion. Enjoy a fun family show that highlights what children can do to help the environment.
Saturday, April 25:
Nature’s Recyclers event at Las Vegas Natural History Museum: The Las Vegas Natural History Museum presents Nature’s Recyclers- a day-long event centered on cockroaches, mold, worms and other scavengers who rid the world of waste materials. Events will include butterfly bingo, earthworm dissection and Critter Connection programs about millipedes and cockroaches.
“What On Earth Day” at the Springs Preserve: Springs Preserve will celebrate “What On Earth Day” to inspire awareness of and appreciation for the Earth’s environment with our Earth Day Olympics, scavengers hunts, special tours, live entertainment and more from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Monday, April 27
National Public Lands Day Great Unconformity: Join in on a spring National Public Lands Day event by helping care for the Great Unconformity, where a gap of about 1.2 billion years amoung rock layers exists. See for yourself that the rock jumps from 500 million years old to 1.7 billion years old with the intervening layer completely lost!
